This is nicholas.
Study OpenOffice.org version 3.
this will be.

A bit of experimentation shows that the problem is not with your third paragraph but the second: it is the fact that the previous sentence (albeit in another paragraph) ends with a digit that causes this behaviour. There are some exceptions to automatic capitalisation: abbreviations are not supposed to stimulate a capital on the next word. Is it possible that Writer is seeing "3." as a number and therefore not necessarily the end of a sentence? I know some people write numbers with leading points - e.g. ".3" for "0.3" - but I should always write "3" or "3.0" and not "3.". Nevertheless, perhaps that is the exception that is being catered for.

That seems an extreme bit of "helpfulness" on OO's part, doesn't it?

OTOH, maybe the take-home lesson is never rely on Auto-anything: algorithms that seek to be smarter than the user can never succeed. Yet I find, as an OO neophyte, that it's constantly insisting it knows more than I do about all manner of things - like turning outline/numbering mode on/off, or even making its own decisions about when to remove that numbering toolbar (which unfortunately is necessary in the absence of command-line directives to the program).

I have spent WAY too much time looking for ways to turn off automagic behaviors, and continue looking. Can anyone help by starting with this simple question: How to make the "Bullets & Numbering" toolbar stick? [One thing I know: "Lock the toolbar" does not make it stick.]

Related question: What is the connection (if any) between
Format | Bullets and Numbering [which includes an Outline tab]
and
        Tools | Outline Numbering
?
