Many thanks to those who kindly answered my question. A publisher
wanted some parts of the text to be "hard spaced", i.e. to have spaces
among characters, as in "s-o-m-e--s-p-a-ce", where '-' represents a
space. They did not want expanded spaces obtained with a character
style. It is horrible, I know, but I noticed that even large
publishing houses use sometimes very old fashioned systems.
I solved in this way:
1. prepared a character style, called it 'myspace', and marked manually
all the parts that were to be "hard spaced".
2. exported as XHTML
3. wrote a script that adds spaces in the areas of text where 'myspace'
is active.
4. imported the XHTML file and saved under another name.

Primitive, but effective.
I also would like to add that, even if I normally use LaTeX for
writing, I find OpenOffice an extremely powerful tool and, thanks to
this list, I'm learning a lot.

Thanks again,
guido, italy
