Installing OpenOffice.org (OOo) does not change anything about how MS
Word operates -- the only thing that may be different is the "file
association" that determines what program to use when you double-click a
file to open it. When you are using Word (not Writer) to create a new
document, Word tries to guess at a possible file name from the content,
as has been true for many years. OOo leaves the filename blank. In both
cases, you just accept Word's suggestion or, for either Word or Writer,
provide your own filename. (In using the Writer Save As capability, make
sure that automatic file name extension is selected.)
Word does not (AFAIK) support creating PDFs directly. If you have a PDF
"printer" utility installed, you can select that as your printer to get
a PDF. In Writer, you can use File > Export as PDF to create a PDF file
without changing your basic document's type. That includes opening a
Word (.doc or .docx) file in Writer, then doing the Export.
