Nicholas, as far as I know (not sure about Xubuntu), *all* recent Ubuntu versions, including Kubuntu, erbjuder one version or another OOo per default. So if you post your problem to the Ubuntu fora, you should there be able to find fellow users both familiar with it and who also hopefully can suggest procedures which can resolve it. My experience with these fora is very positive - the interest shown there for helping others with their difficulties is heart-warming ; it almost restores one's faith in *H sapiens sapiens*....
