the file type "Microsoft WinWord 5 (*.doc)" is available in the drop-down list of available file types in the File>Open menu. Have you tried that?

I tried that; it did not work. The MS Word 5.x for DOS files have been always imported by OpenOffice as-is (all the binary coding become gibberish).

Just to emphasize, this is MS Word 5.x for DOS, not for Windows (so, not Winword). That said, I am not sure what OpenOffice meant by WinWord 5, since there is no such thing (MS Word for Windows jumped from version 2 to version 6).

I use OpenOffice 3.1.0 and 2.4.1 in OS X and Linux.

Any other idea? Thanks!
