Since the thread read as if the person had Outlook, but either

that option.

Once you get Thunderbird reading the old emails and address books,
you do not need Outlook anymore, do you?  I did not.  If you had
a trial that used Outlook, then do not want to pay the fee, Thunderbird
is the answer, or at least for me.

Certainly. Especially as Lightning Calendar extension is rapidly
approaching the functionality of Outlook. Open Office will also use
TBird addressbook as a database for letters, labels and envelopes,
although it's not /quite/ as intuitive as Outlook and Word...


Well you can get Lightning's Calendar as a stand alone as Sunbird.
I have both the extension and the stand alone to see which is
better for me.  I have not decided so I still have both after
months.
