I think what you are looking for is something similar to the right red triangle indicator when merged cells are too large to fit. To see what I am referring to, enter '1234657483939' in both A1 and B1. Then select both cells and Format|Merge Cells. The result shows: 1234657483939 123465748> where '>' is a red right triangle indicator to show that there is more data to be displayed. If that is what you are looking for, then I'd suggest creating a test spreadsheet & attaching that, along with a screenshot to your bug report so that the developers can see exactly what you are referring to.
