I think what you are looking for is something similar to the right red
triangle indicator when merged cells are too large to fit. To see what I
am referring to, enter '1234657483939' in both A1 and B1. Then select
both cells and Format|Merge Cells. The result shows:
1234657483939 123465748> where '>' is a red right triangle indicator to
show that there is more data to be displayed.
If that is what you are looking for, then I'd suggest creating a test
spreadsheet & attaching that, along with a screenshot to your bug report
so that the developers can see exactly what you are referring to.
Note: if your screen/calc setting do not automatically show the red
right triangle, then simply use the mouse to narrow the column width of
A1 or B1.

I am wondering whether the devs could modify the 'Text Overflow' setting
in Options | Calc | View to not only toggle the overflow arrow when
there is data in the adjacent cell, but when there is no data in the
adjacent cells. Maybe a sub-setting of the 'Text Overflow'.
