What can I do to complete the installation of Open Office?
What exactly are you trying to run when you say it can't find the file?
Do you go to the folder where you extracted OpenOffice.org and double
click on the Setup.exe icon? If you are using the Run command on the
start menu, are you *SURE* the Setup.exe you are running is the one in
the directory where you extracted OpenOffice.org? And be sure you did
extract the files rather than just view them--XP will now show you the
contents of a zipped archive, but I don't believe you can access a file
in that archive via the Run command. If you right click on the zipped
folder, it should offer an option to unpack the file--note where you put
that and then rerun the setup program.
Microsoft's trial version of MS Office should not have any impact on
installing OpenOffice.org unless it managed to foul up XP in
general--unlikely though I suppose possible, but then in that case
OpenOffice.org would simply be one thing of many that should exhibit
problems. And, frankly, if there is a system level problem, given the
fact that system was previously infected with a virus, I'd want to try
and confirm you didn't end up somehow getting the virus reinstalled when
attempting to restore your system (that is, was there an infected backup
of something that got restored) or some other carryover impact of the
virus isn't impacting things.
That's especially true if you aren't sure how the virus got into your
system and you restored your email backups. You indicate that the
computer technician was somehow responsible--are you sure of that fact,
or do you merely suspect it? I notice you use Outlook Express for
email, an all-time favorite program of those delivering virus payloads,
so the bomb may be hooked to an email that is stored in your folders and
could reappear when you viewed or reopened that email. Personally, I
would suggest looking to another program for email--there truly are
reasons to use Outlook for groupware features (I know, not necessarily
politically correct here, but... <grin>), but I know of no compelling
reason whatsover to use Outlook Express unless you just like being
exposed to payloads. Get Thunderbird or some other mail client that's
not such a tempting target.
It's always possible you have a damaged download of OOo--so if nothing
else works, simply download 1.1.4 to a new folder, extract that and
install from there.
