That's odd: it doesn't do that for me.  It needs to connect to the 
internet, of course.  Are you connected?  Or is your system perhaps 
connecting to the network because you are making this check?  If so, 
is it your internet connection's log-in that is being requested?  Is 
the log-in page an OpenOffice page or something else?

Which user name and password are you speaking of here?  You do not 
need to register in order to download and use OpenOffice, of course, 
so there should never be a need to log in just to obtain any 
update.  Did you register at the OpenOffice web site?  Was it that 
user name and password that you entered?  If those do not work, it 
suggests again that you are not being asked for authentication by 
OpenOffice but by something else.

In any case, version 3.1 is current, so there are no updates.
