You do not need to register in order to download and use OpenOffice, of course, so there should never be a need to log in just to obtain any update. Did you register at the OpenOffice web site? Was it that user name and password that you entered? If those do not work, it suggests again that you are not being asked for authentication by OpenOffice but by something else.
