Thanks Brian, I tried what you suggested. I tried opening and saving
documents in both writer, and Calc. I still have the same results, in
recent documents is is no documents. Thanks for trying.

Writer 3.10 is not keeping track of the recent documents. Is there
something that I am supposed to turn on? Is anyone else having
this trouble? I don't know when the problem started, I just know
that when I opened the writer this last seven or eight times there
were no recent documents and writer.

Sorry, I forgot about that. I running windows XP.
This information is apparently stored in one of the per-user
configuration files. One possibility is that this file has become
corrupted or lost. If you delete such files, OpenOffice will often
create new copies for you. This is very much a guess, but you might
like to try this:
o Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter.
o Rename C:\Documents and Settings\<login-name>\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org\3\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\Common.xcu
- where <login-name> is the name of the account you use. (This way,
you can recover the file if the scheme fails.)
o Restart OpenOffice and test.
Application Data is a hidden folder, so you may have to turn on the
display of hidden items in order to browse to and through it.
I trust this helps.

I think maybe http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/node/541 will
be of help to you.
It is an OpenOffice.org history manager.
