I have MS Word and Excel files.
Are these readable in openoffice.org?
Are there any problems in transporting files from MS modules (Excel,
WORD,
Power Point...) to OpenOffice. org? If so what are they?
Readable, yes, unless you have macros you want to work.
Editable so you can send them back in one piece? Only if they're fairly
simple documents.
My experience is that I love OOo, and find it perfect for most
situations - particularly for solo work. Where it falls down (or rather,
where MS falls down, but sadly OOo has to live in the real world), is
when you convert fairly complex documents to and fro between OOo and MS
Office users.
My case involves contract proposals and research reports, typically 20
to 50 pages long, and professionally formatted according to set
corporate design conventions. Switching between OOo and MS Word breaks
the formatting. Often so badly that the resulting document is useless
for anything other than draft purposes.
If I find a template, or create one, that allows me to get an acceptable
level of interoperability between the two, even if the document is long,
formatted in detail, and contains charts and tables, I'll gladly forward
it to the list. If anyone knows of such a template or howto, I'd be
interested. By all means, mail me directly if you do, since I don't read
this list all day.
