2nd reply, and I think I found it, its sensitive to the number of clicks, 
after I had clicked in A1 4 or 5 times rapidly (for 74 year old fingers that 
is), I finally got a blinking cursor in the box, and I could then type 
whatever I wanted.  But why so many clicks?  Should not a single click do it?
