Thanks for the info. I did pull up the dialog box (see attached file).
The default group of settings for the borders are what I call the
presets, as it places the borders around the cells as shown in the
picture. I played with it some more after I sent in the question and
found that if I used the user-defined borders on the left I could do
exactly what I was looking to do. I also figured out how to place some
space between the edges of the cells and the text in the cell.

I don't think that the Borders icon lets you do that, you need the
full Borders dialouge.From memory:
Right click the cell -> Formatting -> Borders
