[users] Data Base accesss

I am looking for a simple way to access an existing data base.  It is 
well-defined, and consists of a 1,400 field record.   

I wish to extract only 2-3 fields, perform some simple arithmetic, and print 
the result.  Is there a simple language to do this, or must I use JAVA  (of 
which I have no knowlege) ?

I would appreciate it if somone would point me in the right direction.  I have 
already down-loaded openoffice successfully.  I need a simple set of 
instructions--I have had minimal openoffice experience.
