Ian, you've gotten several answers to your rhetorical question, but
you might also be interested to know that the list sees you
([email protected]) as subscribed. Your message did not come through
the moderator, but directly to the list. I'm curious about this, maybe
others are, too. Any idea how this comes about? Gmane users are
subscribed through a separate mechanism and can view and post via the
newsgroup, but I haven't heard of anything similar for comcast. In any
case, your PS isn't necessary, we don't see you as unsubscribed.
First, thanks for the replies to my inquiry.

I belong to a few lists, but I didn't think this was a list. I follow
it on usenet via gmane. I wasn't aware that it was accessible both
ways. Since you state I am subscribed to the list, I probably
subscribed some time ago and am on some type of "no mail" option. I
only use open office when I have a semester that has classes where a lot
of paper writing is required.
So tell me, what is the difference between sending an email to:
[email protected] and posting a message to usenet
gmane.comp.openoffice.questions ?
If you send mail to the list from an unsubscribed account, the messages go to a moderator before posting, and you would generally not see responses unless you were directly copied (which is what your PS was trying to avoid, since you follow the Gmane newsgroup). In your case, though, you apparently posted through the newsgroup (I missed that part of the header), but the account was the comcast one rather than the usual gmail type, so I guess that when you added the newsgroup, this is the account you told Gmane to use.

If you sent mail to the list using the comcast account directly, I'm not sure what you'd see -- it depends on whether Gmane actually subscribed that account for you, or whether the list manager keys off of one of the other header fields of the Gmane traffic and ignores the From. If the account was subscribed, you probably would see no difference at all; otherwise, it would be moderated, and you'd notice a delay (maybe several days) before your post showed up on the list. It isn't clear, at least to me, what sort of arrangements there are between Gmane and the list manager about the normal e-mail traffic; I hope it isn't generated and then discarded, that would be a waste of resources.

Typical subscribers use e-mail for both posting and reading, to the dismay of many who use newsgroups and believe everybody should. :-)
