On the pane into which you type the caption there's a drop-down list
labelled "Category". Select "<none>" from that list and the prefix-text goes
away.

Thanks, Harold. That disposes of the prefix (for new captions, at least), but:

1) Do you know the point of that prefix syntax "<category> Number range <category>"?

2) IAC, it would be nice to be able to edit a caption, so do you know the answer to my other question? -

... and when I try to edit the text to remove the nonsense, I'm stymied: the Help just says "You can edit caption text directly in the document" - but how?

Anywhere inside the picture frame, the cursor indicates that I can only
move or resize the frame. Trying to click in the caption does not change the cursor to a text cursor. A right click in the caption (or anywhere else in the frame, for that matter), brings up a context menu which includes "Caption" - but that does not allow to edit (or even delete) the existing text. What am I missing?

I appreciate your help,
John <still a bit baffled>
