The email client isn't hard-coded in Debian either. It gets set up via
the desktop environment (e.g. KDE or GNOME or Xfce4, etc.) or via one's
system preferences.
My system works just fine too with the send document using KMail in a
GNOME DE. I'd suggest Jonathon that you check out your configurations
and try and track it down.
