If, and only if, you wish to try newer versions while staying on the
same release (i.e. Jaunty) then you could look at backports:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports
Apt-pinning is used to cherry pick applications from the backports
repository. There are a lot of documents explaining how, but the link
above is probably the best / most relevant.
