Each level of a list has its own indentation value, and as you change levels in the list (with tabs or by using the Increase Indent and Decrease Indent icons in the Formatting toolbar) the appropriate indentation is supplied automatically.
Barbara, I'm sorry you had to waste your time for that explanation. I knew that, and asked a stupid question too late at night.
In your case, you don't need to specify a list at all; the list really only matters if you want bullets/numbers, or if you want text to flow based on the list level when you reach the end of a line.
I think I actually do need the list style, but (tomorrow) will get back to that other thread and your thoughtful reply to that question about annotating a hierarchical list.
What may have been confusing about using the first column of a table for your list is that inside a table cell, you use Ctrl-Tab, not just Tab. Sorry I didn't mention that before -- I use the indention icons rather than tabs, so I didn't think of it.
You are too kind, making excuses for my confusion: It was stupidity, coupled with working a bit too late. But I do appreciate knowing about Ctrl-Tab; I don't think I knew that.
