To Whom It May Concern:

Our E.A.S.T. (Environments And Spatial Technology) lab has taken on an awesome
project called Project H.E.L.P. (Helping Education by Learning Programs).

The goal of Project H.E.L.P. is to put our public school district's
"technologically obsolete" computers into the homes of students who do not own
a home computer. The project serves the dual purpose of helping the
environment by keeping the computers out of the landfill, and of helping put
computers into the homes of students who do not own their own computer due to
financial reasons.

Due to technological advances, many otherwise perfectly good computers have
been sent to the district storage warehouse when classroom and teacher computer
upgrades have been made. The warehouse is becoming filled with computers that
could be put to good use. This over-abundance of computers caused some
E.A.S.T. Lab students to think how they could be reused or recycled and put to
better use. After trips to the dusty warehouse, numerous brainstorming
sessions, and discussions, Project H.E.L.P. was born.

Our district has several hundred computers that will be made available through
this project. Our students have worked hard with our State Representative
Janet Johnson this semester getting HB 2557 passed through the Arkansas State
Legislature to become Act 1673. Act 1673 now makes it legal for us to offer
our district's surplus personal computers for "loan" to public school students
attending our school district for home use.

High school E.A.S.T. students, with help and cooperation from our high school's
computer networking classes (Cisco) and our district's technology department,
will repair and refurbish the stored computers to put into the hands of their
fellow students.

Project H.E.L.P. students will also train the students and parents who receive
these computers with basic computer assembly and operation instructions, as
well as some software training. Internet safety tips and a list of positive
educational websites will also be provided.

Open Office can help by providing us with the needed software to load Open
Office on these computers for the students to use. Do you have any materials
that our
students can utilize for teaching about the Open Office programs to these
students. Any contributions that you can make to this project would be
extremely helpful! We have received a grant to put some of our students to
work this summer on this project, so the sooner we know about how we can go
about utilizing Open Office the better!

If you need any further information please let me know!

Thanks for your time and your help.
