This sounds like it might be the problem: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=94261 [calc 3 unable to load sum formulas correctly] One of the suggestions might work on the 3.1.1 OOo: "Tools > Options > Load/Save > General and set the ODF format version to 1.0/1.1" Give that a try with a small test file.
