This sounds like it might be the problem:

[calc 3 unable to load sum formulas correctly]

One of the suggestions might work on the 3.1.1 OOo:
"Tools > Options > Load/Save > General
and set the ODF format version to 1.0/1.1"

Give that a try with a small test file. If it does work, then can you
please can add a comment on the bug report?
