I don't know if other MS e-mail programs, such as Outlook, also lose their spellchecking capability if you remove MS Office. One of the things that has caused confusion in the past in this list is that OpenOffice.org does not include an e-mail program. Instead it will invoke whatever program is configured in Windows as your "default program for e-mail".
