Came this utterance formulated by JOE Conner to my mailbox:

Agreed, this was the method as taught back then, in fact i know of many
typists taught this method well after '56.

This is very dependant on the font in use, and perhaps to old eyes like
mine on font size. I would add a "one" and a "bar" to your mix "l1!Ii|"
and in some fonts square brackets as well "[]".
