I have a better idea, get
http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO/various_topics/StarXpert_OOoMultiSave.zip
 and install it with pkgchk and have the choice of multiple save formats. Also 
you need to remember that MSO barely opens its own files let alone OOo files. 
In any case you might find the sendoc macro useful. See 
http://documentation.openoffice.org/thirdparty.html and select ooomacros.org.
