I have not clear how a switch to mailman would reduce such messages. Especially because I am sure that many of them are caused by how annoying people find the hundreds of messages about THIS: > whether or not an address is subscribed, whether an unsubscribed > address was CC'd on the reply. The only way to reduce the hundreds of such messages (and the unsubscription requests deriving from how annoying they are) which is both really easy AND surely working is to do what I already explained here: http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=65332 if every subscriber started doing tomorrow what I suggest there the total amount of traffic (INCLUDING the duplicated copies that subscribers would receive and that, unlike the threads above are really easy to filter out automatically) would decrease dramatically in volume. And a much higher percentage of it would be actual support rather than threads on "how to do support with a mailing list" The very idea that anyone should bother for a second about: > whether or not an address is subscribed, whether an unsubscribed > address was CC'd on the reply. and that you should annoy to death all subscribers with tons of duplicates "forwarded to unsubscribed OP" is completely idiot and without any solution in the conditions in which this list must operate (like messages coming in from unsubscribed posters in many different ways: the list address, gmane, web forms etc... and Collabnet/SUN never bothering to do something about it). If a purely technical solution existed, which could be implemented without Collabnet, it would have been implemented years ago. This list fell prey 6/7 years ago of a small bunch of people who were (in one or two cases) idiots completely clueless about email and PROUD of it or, much more frequently, great caring people with a lot of good will but still so clueless about email to not see how absurd and how much an uneffective time waster the idea above is. So they started discussing among them how to implement it and, even if many of them are gone now, the ONLY thing they've accomplished in 6 years (besides filling the archives with useless threads) is to drive and keep away from this list almost everybody else. In such conditions, the only kind of support volunteers who can remain active on this list for a while are those who (in good will, of course) still feel good and productive spending more time running after filters and duplicating the list traffic than actually **sending** support answers. The archives of the last years prove this. The only solution is to do what I suggest here: http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=65332 with one possible, voluntary addition (no, I'm NOT doing it myself yet...): whenever you see somebody who spams the list with "copy re-sent to unsubscribed poster" or discusses how to do detect such posters, either set up a filter to delete ALL their messages before they enter your mailbox or just report them for spamming to the list moderator.
