Ummmm I tend to save files in directories for projects or clients or the like
OR ..../year/month/file.name

A suggestion if you are using Windows, find and install the free version of
PowerDesk. It's a file manager that WinExplorer is starting to catch up with
but that is a side issue. There is a mini program called pdhelper (some
versions a .dll and others a .exe) which helps navigate when opening & saving
files. It adds 2 icons to the top bar of the open (or save as) dialogue box
where it 'keeps track' of opened files and folders.

Eg to open a file you have used in OOo before, click open and click the 'new'
file icon and you get a list of files you have used. Similarly, if you want to
open a file in a folder that you use often, click open|folder icon and get a
list of folders. Sadly it doesn't (or didn't last time I tried) work with MS
apps - MS in their wisdom disable its function somehow.

It's one of the utilities that I miss since moving away form windows.

All the best
