Anyone care to share recent experiences with OpenOffice.org and
MS Office 2007 XML documents?
I received a *.ppsx file recently (MS PowerPoint 2007 XML format,
I assume), and tried opening it on my Mac with:
- OpenOffice.org 3.1.0
It prompted me with a list of 140 possible formats to import as.
I chose "Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 XML", and it opened the file.
It looks partly right, but not good enough to work with.
I can see that there are 10 slides, and can view each slide.
However, most of the formatting is bad enough that I can't read
the text of the slides, since many lines of text are overlaid
on top of each other, clipped, or missing entirely. Some of
the graphics are perfect. Others are missing.
- OpenOffice.org 3.0.0
No prompt for import format. It opened automatically, but looks
the same as in 3.1.0, so not really usable.
- OpenOffice.org 3.2
I'm about to download and try this.
I also opened the file (on another Mac) with:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2008 for Mac
Looks mostly right, but some font spacing and layout issues still
cause some text to be overlaid or clipped.
Seems like the XML formats for MS Office are new enough that they
don't yet work well across platforms (Office for Windows vs. Office
for Mac) or across tools (MS Office vs.OpenOffice.org). Is this
what everyone else is seeing? Or is there a way to make them work
better? So far, I've avoided using them, but I can't always control
what other people send me.

Is that ppsx file "postable" for others to try ?
I had the chance to open a couple of docx documents until now, with OOo
3.1 on Windows XP, and they opened just fine.
