[snip] I am assuming you are using some version of Windows. RevoUninstaller, which has a free version for individuals, will almost always do an uninstall even when the Microsoft one won't do it properly. After you run that then use the free version of Eusing Free Registry Cleaner to clean out the registry to delete associations that are no longer valid. (I've used other registry cleaners several times, but this one found pre v1 and v1.5 Firefox entries that were still there!) For Firefox go to the menu Tools > Options > Main tab and in the first section labeled "Startup" you can set the page you want to see when you start Firefox.
