I'm going to post my feeble attempts at getting a line chart done in
the hopes that (a) I will eventually be successful and (b) someone
else will benefit from my flounderings.
I have a spreadsheet with the following columns and data ranges:
A: date
B: odometer reading -- now up to about 60000
C: trip odometer -- 100-500
D: gas purchased -- 20 max
E: cost -- $60 max
F: cost/gal -- $5.00 max
G: MPG - 20-40
I want a plot of B, E, F and G vs A. I would like separate scales for
each Y-axis value.
Here's what I did.
1) Select all the data in the chart from the first row of interest to
the last.
2) Insert > Chart
3) Under Chart Type, select Line and Stack Series (although it's not
clear to me what "Stack Series" means)
4) Next brings me to Data Range and I accept the default of "Data
Series in columns"
5) Under Data Series, I remove all data series except columns A, B, E,
F and G. I have no idea what to do with "Range for Y-Values".
6) Chart Elements, I leave alone for the time being.
Result is a chart where A is not the X-axis variable, and there is
only one scale for all of B, E, F and G!!
So, three questions:
1) How do I make A the X-axis variable?
2) How do I make separate scales for the Y-axis variables?
3) How do I insert the chart on Sheet 2 instead of sheet 1?
Thanks.
Your question,
#1. You make the X-Axis depend upon a column of cells. If you want
to vary the axis range, then link the cells to the appropriate cells of
the range. It is more difficult to explain it than it is to do it.
I didn't see any way to "make the X-axis depend on a column of cells.
Sometimes, the X-axis is based on column A
Not sure what you mean by "vary the axis range". Did I say something
that suggested I needed to do that?
#2. A property of the variables is which y axis to display against.
Changing a check-box will switch the axis.
Where do I see that property? Which check box?
#3. A simple copy and paste can move the graph to wherever you want it.
So you're saying that calc puts the graph where it wants and then I have
to cut and paste it to Sheet 2 if that's where I want it?
If you want me to help you then send me your spreadsheet off-line and I
will see if I can get it built for you.
Thanks, Joe, but I want to learn how to do it myself.
The last spreadsheet that I sent to you had a graph with it. Did you look at the graph? Is it in
someway not what you are asking for?
Yes and yes.
