OOo 3.1.1 on Win XP Pro

I have a Calc spread sheet. I want each cell to be over- or under-lined (the
same for all cells but I don't mind which) to make the thing easier to read
on the printed page. I do the following:

    - Select all the cells
    - Format>Cells>Borders
    - Choose a line style and position it at the top of the cell to give an
    overline
    - Ensure the line's colour is black
    - Click OK

The result is that only the first row is overlined. Same thing with
underline (position the border at the bottom of the cell); only affects the
first row.

What am I doing wrong, please?

Hi Harold

It sounds like you are on the right track. I use Calc to design all the forms I use in business, and I think I know where you are going wrong.

In multiple cell selections you are usually presented with a graphic in the Format>Cells>Borders dialogue box that has:
a line across the top;
a line across the middle;
a line across the bottom;
and vertical lines on the right and left hand sides, and one in the middle.

These represent the first two rows, if you like, or the last two rows (and two of the columns).

If you only specify the top line in the graphic then only the top row will be overlined. If you only specify the bottom line in the graphic then only the bottom row will be underlined.

If you specify the top line and the middle line then every row will be overlined. If you specify the bottom line and the middle line, then every row will be underlined.

I hope that makes sense, if not you can send me a sample spreadsheet to my private e-mail address and I will be happy to have a look at it for you.

kind regards,

James
