      Here is another thought. Try going about it in the other 
direction. Have the Writer document open into which you wish to scan a 
photo. Then use 
Insert > Graphics> Scan > Request. 
(You might need to first do Insert > Graphics > Scan > Select Source to 
tell OOo what scanner you are using.) This process should allow you to 
insert a scanned photo into the Writer document.
     Here is another suggestion. You might want to first insert a frame 
and then insert the photo into the frame. If you do it this way, you 
can add a caption to your photo within the frame. If you need to move 
the photo in any way, the caption will be moved with it.
