MIT's Project MAC and other campus networks that were later
interconnected with DARPAnet: Treat bandwidth and readers' time as
valuable; edit messages for context and reply on-point.  Still seems
like a nice idea to me.

I came to the Internet late. Started out on BBS nets, including FIDOnet.

BBS messaging required trimming quotes for the sake of sysops' phone bills. I remember one multi-net sysop saying his phone bills were $500 a month even at overnight rates. We usually used the intersperse quote/new material method.
