I would like to think I am not that stupid as to click on the "Save as"

to suspect you are right - and it was very astute of you to think of
that possibility - well done!
I /did/ add the 'Save as...' icon to by button bar in recent times and
it does have red on it like the PDF button, so maybe ...?
I just opened a new OOo Writer document and tried bot the PDF button and
the Save as button and each performed as it should, so, either there was
something wrong with the document I was working on at the time
(unlikely) or I mistakenly and repetitively clicked on the Save as icon
instead of the PDF one.
