Can't figure this out. I'm so tired, have deadlines.

Linda: You're on the right track!
Insert > Footer > click default is the right first step (this assumes you
have one page style, Default, which you want page numbers on)
If you want the page numbers on all but the first page, there's a page
style called First Page you can apply that has no footer, and then you can
insert the footer on the next page --by default, this has the Default page
style. Surprise!
then click in the footer as you did
then select Insert > Fields > Page Number
Now you have the pages numbered.
You may choose to enhance the numbers by typing in, for example, "Page "
before you insert the page number field.
Or else possibly "Page " then insert the page number field, then "of " and
then Insert > Fields > Page Count. This would give you, for example, "Page 1
of 8".

I just tried this; it didn't work. When I went to the second page and di
and insert>>footer, the footer also appeared on page one.
Sounds as if you don't have the First Page style applied. Try this:
* Create a new document, or go to the first page of an existing one.
* Display the Styles tools (e.g., via F11) and choose the Page icon
(should be 4th from left). You may need to make sure "All" is
selected for the page styles display set.
* Double-click on the First Page entry. Your first page should now
have no footer.
* Click in a later page; it should have the Default style. Now do
the inserts for the footer and the page number field. Your first
page should still not have a footer.
OK now? By the way, if you go to Format > Page, the Organizer tab should
show the name of the page style being used, and what style will be used
when the text flows to a new page.
