John, any spreadsheet program can be used for ledger / checkbook / other
account-tracking purposes. Poke around a bit on a search for "Checkbook
template" and convert to OOo, or go wild and build your own with headers,
auto-totals, linked columns, custom report macros, and the like.

(I've personally flip-flopped between Quicken and spreadsheet since v1.0 of
Quicken -- even made a side-trip into QuickBooks. My current book-keeper
prefers to use Quicken instead of learning any sort of more-flexible
spreadsheet, in large part for the canned reports available. Said reports are
certainly possible in any decent spreadsheet, and OOo certainly qualifies in
that regard. Just takes time&effort to create them.)
