Hi James,
Sorry I do not understand md5sum. However I do have a virus/spyware which I could not remove in spite of re-formatting my HD 4 times and re-instaling Win XP Sp2. I also have Avast AV, PC Threatfire and All-in-one Secretmaker. The first 2 updates itself automatically almost every day, and I scan my Desktop every 2 days always with negative results. I know that the maleware exists in spite of all my efforts to get rid of it because it sends garble e-mails to garbage; because I changed my first address in yahoo to garbage. Regards Sam ).

Md5sum is a method of verifying file integrity. You can find out about using it here:
http://download.openoffice.org/md5sums/index.html

Can you not turn off your antivirus scanner? You shouldn't have to uninstall it. Failing that, can you download somewhere else and copy to a CD or flash drive?

Did you download the package from www.openoffice.org?

It sounds as if Sam actually did get a virus or other malware, and a very nasty one, not just a warning from an overzealous AV program. I'm with you, though -- the download should be checked with md5sum to ensure that it was corrupted at his end and not at the source (which is *very* unlikely to have been the case if the download came from a reputable site).
