To whoever is out there....
I certainly hope you can help!! I recently downloaded OpenOffice to my home
computer as my husband needed a Word program for work. (We just had a new
baby--so feeding her was a higher priority than feeding Bill Gates--LOL) I
have Open Office at my job and have had no problems with it. My husband
however, had to import a file for his job and hit "yes" to "import all" and
now all of our desktop icons are open office icons and it won't even let me
run the program I need to work on something I am doing here at home!!
Furthermore, I tried to use System Restore to go back to before he had done
this and it won't even let me do that!! I also tried "add/remove programs"
but still no such luck!! Please help!! I'm freaking out!! :)
Thanks

I'm not familiar with the "import" you're referring to, and generally
speaking a change of icons just means that the "file association" for
that type of file has been changed to automatically use that program by
default-- the file itself is not changed, and can be opened with its
original program by right-clicking, choosing Open With, and browsing to
the appropriate program (which can be designated as the default again,
by selecting the option to always use this program for this file type).
So we'll need some more information here. What type of file was
originally "imported" and exactly how? Did you get OOo from the official
website, www.openoffice.org, or somewhere else? What happens when you
double-click on one of the files you are trying to open, and what type
of file was it (that is, what file extension did it have before), and
what is it now? (If OOo is now associated with the file, it should be
able to open it, even though it was not the original creator.) What
operating system and version are you using, and what version of OOo?
As for Add/Remove programs -- that ordinarily works, unless the OOo
QuickStarter is running while you try to remove OOo. What happened when
you tried? I'm not sure the original file associations are reinstated,
though, for things like .doc files. If you actually have removed OOo
(that is, it no longer shows in your Start menu, if you are on a Windows
system) the files may have to be associated with their original programs
again, as above.
By the way, the people on this list are just volunteers who use OOo and
help others do so, too. Please respond only to the list
([email protected]) so others can help as needed.
