"the computer" is not doing it. It is all entirely under your control, using both the settings and the specific commands contained in Open Office. You can set Open Office to default to open any of a number of file formats. You can also choose what format in which to save new files that you create. I would be very surprised if your version of Open Office wasn't already set to default to saving newly created files in Open Office format. It is somewhat unclear what you mean when you write, "defaults to the Microsoft software" Does this mean that when you click on your Open Office icon, W7 opens Windows Office instead? Hardly seems likely. Or does it mean that when you save a file, it is getting saved in Microsoft format instead of Open Office? That is completely under your control at the time you issue the save command, and has been in every single word processor or spreadsheet you have ever used. Have you never used "SAVE AS"? BTW when querying a list like this it is helpful if you supply the version number of the software. It is also greatly helpful for you to be as explicit as possible about the software behaviours in question. "defaults to the Microsoft software" really doesn't tell us anything. I'll copy your address since I don't know whether you're subscribed.
