To selext a background image behind text can be awkward. it is best accomplished in the space between paragraphs. I think from memory [control] click or [control] doubleclick ensures the image is selected. Selection is shown when the corner and mid-side image scale boxes are present. The image can then be deleted with the delete key or "edit - cut" from the menu.
