I am not even a novice when it comes to master documents but have you
tried the Documentation Project?
http://www.oooauthors.org/english/userguide3/published/WG3_index gives a
list of user guides that are available and one of them is call "Working
with Master Documents". It is chapter 13 in the full Write Guide also
available from the page.
