[users] How to open a new document

Just installed the supposedly updated version of Open Office, and I can't find 
anything.   Finally did find 'documents', but no place could I find to open a 
new document.  Have been working on this for 2 days and am totally frustrated.  
 Your help will be GREATLY appreciated.
