What part of OpenOffice.org are you talking about? Writer? Calc? Or even Impress? And which version are you using? You can show a ruler (in Writer) when you go to "View > ruler" (or something similar, I have here a German version only). For Calc, I don't think, that there is a ruler available. I am also not sure, what you mean exactly with your initial description. What grid do you mean? You can tell OOo that it should show you the borders of the range that it will use for displaying text, but I'm not sure, that you're talking about this. Maybe you can give a better description?
