Not necessarily. Please see what Edit > Links allows you to do. If it is
greyed out then the image ought to be embedded.

png is a lossless format but that size is none too big. I can tell you
that embedding a small png in a calc sheet export to pdf no problem with
1.9m109. Didn't try 1.1.4.
