The format for Excel 2003 is .xml not xls. If I remember correctly
all of the Office programs used .xml as their format(Word XML, etc.).
Calc allows you to save a spreadsheet to
Microsoft Excel 2003 XML (.xml). This is near the bottom of File type
dropdown list in the Save As dialog. I don't see Excel 2007 in this list
though.
