Actually the format for Excel 2003 is xls by default *not* xml.

In OOo File|Save As|Save as type:
- Microsoft Word 2003 XML (.xml)
However, expect an error in attempting to save in that format:

Error savind the document <documentname>:
Write Error,
The file could not be written.

If the file has frames or fontwork objects. Example:

[ WordML: Export of Fontwork objects to "MS Word 2003 XML" does not work]
