  I have these settings:
  ------------
  From Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org Writer->General I have
set "Tab stops" to .22 inches.
  ------------
I right-clicked on the paragraph in question, saw that the
tab settings were at .23 inches, I was able to change the
  setting to .22 inches.
I also noted that "Type" was set to "right", changed it to "left"
and reinserted. The tab is now as I want it. I have a solution
(in this case anyway), but since I am willing to learn a little
  theory:
  ------------
You refer to paragraph style? Do I take that to mean:
Format->Styles and Formatting, then choose the "paragraph"
Icon? If so, then I am unsure of where to go from there.
There are an enormous number of options and I'm unsure
  which applies in my case.
  ------------
Understand also that this is not my project, I am inquiring on
behalf of my wife. I may not reply immediately because of other
responsibilites, but if you are willing to help me to understand
the large picture in terms of theory, I would appreciate it if you
would keep an eye on this thread, because I would like to learn
  the theory.

  thanks again :)
