You have already had answers to this on the OOoForum [1].

Actually I think the fact that users documents end up as data files with

Actually, Kara's appears to be full of null characters - 430024 of them according to wc. So it may or may not be related to the '#' type of issue.

In the past I recall advising to change the default temp location to
other than /tmp (I reset my Temporary file paths to
/home/<user>/.openoffice.org/2/User/temp for safety. This is because of
the system crashes (power or otherwise) the /tmp (or similar on Windows)
files will be cleared on reboot. ....

That depends of course very much on what the system admin has decided to do. On XP, I find \windows\temp becomes distressingly full, which appears to be the default :-( *nix varies a lot. But I don't see how that relates to file corruption - loss, perhaps, corruption, no.

regarding this, but can't find them at the moment.

In any event, I think the issue needs further attention. If I get some
time later in the week I'll try a few tests to see if I can replicate.

I think the bigger lesson is that people need to learn how to use the tools they have. It's too easy for the newbie to assume everything's 100% reliable, when in fact nothing is - the result being that basic safety precautions are omitted.
