Thank you, but that's wrong advice. Anchor to/as character are two separate options. The one I understand, the other.... well!

Incidentally, in spite of the comment in my request about vertical locking, I was wrong. 'Enter' inserts a new paragraph, and afaict 'anchor /to/ character' behaves like 'anchor to paragraph'. If I just pad vertically with enough in-line letters, the graphic remains stationary. Wierd.

The xml generated shows no link at all between inserted graphic and the text, there's only what appears to be an absolute position on the page:

<text:p text:style-name="P1">12345 abcde 98765</text:p>
<text:p text:style-name="P1">
<draw:ellipse text:anchor-type="char" draw:z-index="0" draw:style-name="gr1" draw:text-style-name="P2" svg:width="0.828cm" svg:height="1.497cm" svg:x="2.166cm" svg:y="0.293cm">
<text:p/>
</draw:ellipse>

(And worse for me, you can't anchor a frame to a character, which is what I really need. Oh well. But I'd still appreciate advice on what's happening here.)

I'm sure I've raised this before, but it's still an issue for me.

What /exactly/ is "anchor TO character" supposed to do in Writer?

The command is "anchor AS character" and the help file says "Anchors the
selected item as a character in the current text. If the height of the
selected item is greater than the current font size, the height of the line
containing the item is increased."

<snip>
