Turning it off is the best option. In the past i would have said to join the announce mailing list to hear when new versions get released - but with Oracle donating OpenOffice.org to the Apache project who knows what the future holds. Perhaps TDF and LibreOffice will be the best fork. Perhaps Apache will make something of OO.o. Perhaps TDF and Apache can get together and bring it back to one bettter project. The files get unpacked to that folder. It can be useful if the program spits in some circumstances, though i have never used it. You can move them to another location if you choose.
